GDP vs GDP per capita
GDP and GDP per capita begin with the same production aggregate but answer different questions. One describes total economic scale; the other divides that total by population to create a per-person average.

Different questions need different evidence.
Use total GDP when the question concerns the size of recorded production. Use GDP per capita when population scale must be included. Neither indicator measures distribution or personal wellbeing on its own.

Gross domestic product is a national-accounts estimate of production within an economy during a period. It is a powerful activity measure, but not a complete score of prosperity, distribution, sustainability or personal wellbeing.

The same numerator, a different question
Total GDP estimates production within an economic territory during a period. It is useful for questions about the scale of an economy, tax base context or the resources potentially available to support large systems.
GDP per capita divides the aggregate by population. That operation makes population size explicit and changes the result into an average, which is useful when total size would otherwise dominate the comparison.

Why the rankings can disagree
A country can rank highly in total GDP because it has a large population and extensive production, yet rank lower per person. A smaller country can show the reverse pattern. Neither ranking is a correction of the other.
Current-price, constant-price and purchasing-power versions can also produce different orderings. A comparison must preserve the precise series, year, currency or price basis and revision status.

What both indicators leave unanswered
Neither total nor per-capita GDP shows who receives income, what households can purchase locally or whether production depleted environmental assets. Per-capita wording does not make the number a household distribution measure.
For living standards, add evidence such as household disposable income, consumption, prices, public services, health, education and inequality. The right indicator is the one whose boundary matches the question.
