ENTITY / International organization
World Bank
The World Bank Group is a family of international development institutions that provides financing, knowledge and public data. Its indicator catalogue is widely used, but every series still needs its own definition and metadata.
01
An institution and a source system
The name World Bank is often used broadly for the World Bank Group and more narrowly for particular constituent institutions. The official organization page is the right place to distinguish their roles rather than compressing them into one undefined actor.
For this library, the World Bank is also a primary gateway to internationally comparable indicators. A database value is not self-explanatory: the series name, definition, unit, coverage and update status travel with it.
02
Why its data appears across the graph
World Bank indicators can connect economy pages, country profiles, comparisons and statistical-literacy guides. A shared provider can make definitions more consistent across countries, while national sources may add detail or newer local releases.
No organization is a substitute for the research question. The correct series depends on whether the reader is asking about production, income, population, prices, health, education or another concept.
03
A practical reading sequence
Open the indicator metadata before copying the latest observation. Record the unit and date, check whether the series is estimated or revised, and identify any gaps that make a country comparison uneven.
Then follow the connected GDP explainer and comparison guide. They show how one data provider fits inside a wider method based on corroboration, context and explicit limits.
