What GDP measures — and what it leaves out
A plain-language guide to gross domestic product, real versus nominal values and the limits of country rankings.
QUICK ANSWER
The useful idea.
GDP estimates the value of production within an economy during a period. It is useful for tracking economic activity, but it is not a direct score of household wellbeing, equality, sustainability or unpaid work.
Consistent national accounts should reconcile the three views.
Real GDP removes price change to make volume comparisons more meaningful.
GDP per capita divides an aggregate by population; it still is not a distribution measure.
01
The boundary of the measure
GDP adds production that falls inside a defined economic territory and accounting period. The exact national-accounts machinery is technical, but the practical question is simple: what final goods and services were produced, and at what recorded value?
Intermediate inputs are handled so the same production is not counted repeatedly. Statistical agencies assemble the estimate from surveys, administrative records and other sources, then revise it when better information arrives.
02
Why one GDP number can tell several stories
Current-price, or nominal, GDP mixes changes in quantities with changes in prices. Real GDP adjusts for price change and is normally the better tool for asking whether the volume of economic activity grew. Converting values into a common currency introduces exchange-rate effects as well.
Total GDP helps describe the size of an economy. GDP per capita changes the question to an average per resident. Neither tells you how income is distributed, what households can afford in a particular place or whether production depleted natural assets.
03
Use the indicator as a starting point
A careful comparison names the version, year, currency or price basis and data source. It checks whether the value is preliminary and avoids treating small differences as a league table of social success.
For wellbeing, add measures that match the question: household income, health, education, distribution, working time, environmental pressures or subjective wellbeing. GDP remains useful precisely when its job is stated narrowly.
