Mars
Mars is the fourth planet from the Sun, a cold rocky world with a thin atmosphere, two small moons and geological evidence of ancient water. It connects planetary facts to missions, instruments, models and uncertainty.

One planet, several evidence scales
Mars can be observed from orbit, from fixed landers and by mobile rovers. Those platforms do not provide interchangeable evidence: each instrument has a resolution, calibration, location and question it is designed to address.
The planet's channels, minerals, sediments and ice help scientists reconstruct environmental change. Evidence of past water or habitability is not itself evidence that living systems existed.

Why Mars is a model-building subject
Planetary scientists connect individual observations through models of geology, climate, chemistry and orbital history. A useful model is tested against new measurements and can be revised when the evidence does not fit.
