Library of Congress
The Library of Congress is the national library of the United States and a major public collection and research institution. Its primary-source guidance helps readers separate evidence from later interpretation.
01
A library and a source gateway
The Library of Congress preserves and provides access to extensive collections in many formats. A collection item can be a primary source for one research question and still require provenance, date, creator and historical context.
The institution also publishes research and teaching guidance. Those resources are useful because they make the reader's method visible rather than asking for trust in an unattributed summary.
02
Primary does not mean automatically complete
A primary source was created in relation to the period or event being studied, but it reflects a creator, purpose and point of view. It may document one experience while omitting others.
Observation, reflection and questioning help separate what is directly visible from what is inferred. Corroborating sources can then test whether an interpretation holds beyond one item.
03
Connect evidence to explanation
The source-checking guide turns these prompts into a repeatable reading process. The history challenge asks players to distinguish sequence, causation and perspective rather than memorise dates alone.
Open the official collection record whenever a claim depends on a particular item. Note the catalogue description and access conditions as well. The canonical entity page remains the stable junction for future history and culture clusters.
