ENTITY / Standards institute
NIST
The National Institute of Standards and Technology is a United States federal measurement and standards agency. Its public frameworks and terminology help turn broad technology questions into assessable practices.
01
Why NIST appears in technology pages
NIST develops measurement science, standards and technical resources across many fields. The institution is not synonymous with artificial intelligence, but its AI Risk Management Framework supplies a shared vocabulary for examining AI-related risks.
A framework structures questions; it does not certify every system or replace legal, sector-specific and local requirements. The scope and status of the document must remain visible.
02
From vocabulary to practice
The AI RMF groups work around Govern, Map, Measure and Manage. Those functions encourage teams to define context, assign responsibilities, gather evidence, respond to risk and continue monitoring after deployment.
Terms such as validity, reliability, transparency and explainability are related but not interchangeable. Opening the official glossary helps prevent a familiar word from carrying several hidden meanings.
03
Use the node as a source junction
The NIST entity connects the institution, the AI field, the risk guide and future pages that use its technical resources. This avoids repeating an institutional biography in every guide and makes the authority behind each definition easier to inspect.
For a current requirement, consult the live NIST resource and its version information. For learning, follow the guide and decision game to practise how the framework changes real questions.

Artificial intelligence is a broad field of computational methods and systems associated with tasks such as prediction, generation, classification and decision support. Capabilities, limitations and risks depend on the specific system and context.

NASA and NIST are United States federal organizations that produce public technical knowledge, but their missions and outputs differ: NASA centres on air and space, while NIST centres on measurement science, standards and technology.
